The New World of Broadband
By Michael Russell

The popularity of the Internet or the Net, has given rise to a whole new world of entertainment and commerce as well as a great well of information. The Net is so part of our modern lives that we sometimes forget that it is a distributed system and most of it's digital content are "out there" on somebody else's computer or server. For all the speed that your computer can process, on the Internet, it is your access speed that matters the most.

Broadband, a term commonly used for online access that is faster (at least 10x) than that of the conventional telephone line modems, which normally operates at around 56Kbps (Kilo bits per second). With broadband, it is normal to talk in terms of Mbps (Mega bits per second). In some countries, they are even already talking in terms of MBps (Mega Bytes per second) where a Byte is equal to 8-bits. So, if you got 10MBps access, that's equivalent to saying you got 80Mbps access speed.

Over the past several years, broadband installations have constantly been on the rise everywhere in the world. People's everyday lives are so enriched by the Internet and the World Wide Web (or the Web for short), that getting online or being online is a part of our daily routine. With all the eye candy on the Web, like Flash animation and video streaming and even as our entertainment goes online as well with MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), dial-up access just doesn't cut it anymore. And just like everything else in the real world, people don't want to wait.

One other reason for the popularity of broadband is that service providers have been slashing prices to a great extent that now even regular working people can now afford to have broadband at home. And there's a full spectrum of broadband offerings today from different service sectors that no matter how remote your location is, there is sure to be one that can service your area, unlike before where only limited areas can only be served.

Typically, broadband service to the home is delivered over the wire - either by the telephone wire or the cable wire:

. Telephone companies offers the popular DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) broadband service that allows you to use your telephone wire for both data and voice. Sounds familiar? If you've been a dial-up user, then it should. What's different however is with DSL, your telephone won't be busy when you're surfing the Net because DSL allows you to use data and voice at the same time.

. Cable companies offer broadband service over their installed cable lines. Data is simultaneously being transmitted together with the regular cable channels.

. Another way of getting broadband service is through wireless access. This has been growing in popularity due to its availability no matter where you are located.

. One of these wireless broadband offerings is via satellite. The only problem with satellite broadband service is the inherent delay which can be a problem for some applications, like VoIP. . The newer wireless broadband offering is coming from the cellphone companies, which uses their installed cellular network. For those with 3G (or third generation) networks, this can be as fast as 2Mbps broadband speed. This may not sound so fast but consider that you need not be tied down to your desk to enjoy going online.

The choice has never been more varied and never as affordable, so, whether wired or wireless, you can now enjoy today's Internet at the speed of broadband.
